About Us

The Math Open at Andover (MOAA) is an annual mathematics competition for middle school students organized and run entirely by students at Phillips Academy Andover. Founded by Justin Chang ’19 and Andy Xu ’19, the first MOAA invited 130 students from across the world to the Andover, MA campus in October 2018. MOAA 2019 was a similar success, with 28 teams and 146 total competitors. In 2020 and 2021, MOAA was completely virtual, before offering both in-person and virtual options in 2022.


2023 Tournament Directors


Valencia is currently an Upper at Phillips Academy and serves as a Tournament Director. She enjoys swimming, reading books, and playing tennis.
Andy Xu is currently a Senior at Phillips Academy and serves as a Tournament Director. Besides math, he enjoys running track, teaching math, and physics.
Angeline is an Upper at Phillips Academy and serves as a Tournament Director. Besides math, she loves journalism and playing poker with her friends.
Nate is currently an Upper at Phillips Academy and serves as a Tournament Director. Other than math, Nate enjoys Chemistry, running, and hanging out with his friends.
Raina is currently a Senior at Phillips Academy and serves as a Tournament Director for the MOAA. She enjoys theatre, art, and making graphics for the school newspaper.

Anika is currently an Upper at Phillips Academy and serves as the Director of Outreach. Besides math, she enjoys dance, baking, and coding.
Harry is an Upper at Phillips Academy and serves as the problem organizer. Besides math, he enjoys running and playing card games.
Anthony is an upper at Phillips academy and serves as a problem organizer. Besides math, he enjoys playing soccer and sleeping.
David is an upper at Phillips Academy and serves as the webmaster. Besides math, he enjoys playing chess and playing sports.
Jenny is a senior at Phillips Academy and serves as the Director of Registration. Besides math, she enjoys physics, squash, and watching shows.
